With all the different themes and jam-packed learning experiences in our musical adventures, what do all our classes have in common?

Each class ends with a time of packing away the instruments, followed by chasing and popping bubbles. All this happens, whilst listening to a beautiful clip of one of the Brandenburg Concertos, by J. S. Bach.

Just a few of the ways that bubble play stimulates development:

Co-ordination:  hand-eye and foot-eye – reaching up to pop the bubbles with hands and feet as they fall to the floor.

Oral-motor skills: blowing the bubbles around the room strengthens the muscles in the jaw and mouth.

Body awareness: becoming aware of your body as the bubbles pop around you!

Spatial awareness: being aware of how your body functions in space and directionality – where are the bubbles moving and landing?

But, why bother with Bach?

Johan Sebastian Bach was born in Germany in 1685. He is thought of as the “father” of the Baroque period of music. But in his day, he was more noted as an organist rather than a composer.

The music of Bach can be played on any instrument. His melodies are still so culturally relevant that contemporary musicians have reused them several times.

Deborah le Fer, from THE OPEN UNIVERSITY in the UK suggests that you can still hear Bach references in pop music and jazz, centuries after his death.

His influence lives on

Apparently artists like the famous jazz singer, Nina Simone, admired Bach’s melodies. So much so, that she herself interwove them with her own songs.

His most famous melodies stick in your brain – think of the the iconic beginning to his “Six Cello Suites” or his “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” or “Air on the G String.”
